Not found in the wild

Aulonocara Fire Fish is a selectively bred hybrid peacock cichlid

It originates from aquarium breeding, using different Aulonocara species from Lake Malawi to enhance red, orange, and yellow coloration

Because it is a hybrid, it does not represent a specific geographic location in Lake Malawi

Even though Fire Fish peacocks are hybrids, their care requirements closely match those of wild Aulonocara species.

🍽️ Diet (Preferred Food)

In the wild, Aulonocara species feed mainly on small invertebrates found in sandy substrates.
In the aquarium, Fire Fish peacocks thrive on:

High-quality Malawi cichlid pellets or granules

Frozen foods such as:

Brine shrimp

Mysis shrimp

Daphnia

Krill

Occasional live foods (where safe and available)

Some balanced foods containing spirulina or vegetable content can be offered occasionally

Feeding tip:
Avoid very fatty or low-quality foods and do not overfeed, as Malawi cichlids can be prone to digestive issues when diets are unbalanced.

🧠 Behavior & Care Notes

Generally peaceful to moderately territorial, typical of peacock cichlids

Males can become territorial, especially during breeding or when housed with similar-looking males

Best kept in:

Harem groups (1 male with 3–4 females), or

Mixed peacock communities of similar temperament

Should not be mixed with very aggressive Mbuna species
