Males are slightly larger and far more intensely colored

Females are smaller and usually grey-brown to pale blue with faint barring

🌍 Occurrence (Natural Origin)

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa

This locality is found around Likoma Island, one of the major rocky islands in the lake

Inhabits shallow, rocky shoreline and reef zones

Strongly associated with rock faces, crevices, and wave-washed areas

This is a true wild locality form, not a hybrid or aquarium-bred color strain.

🎨 Appearance

Dominant males typically show:

Bright electric blue body

Bold dark vertical barring

Often yellow or orange edging on the dorsal and anal fins (varies by dominance and mood)

Females and juveniles remain subdued in color for camouflage and to reduce aggression

🍽️ Diet (Preferred Food)

In the wild:

Primarily an aufwuchs grazer
