🌍 Occurrence (Natural Origin)

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa

Naturally found along southern rocky shorelines of the lake

Inhabits shallow, rocky habitats with heavy wave action

Strongly associated with rock crevices and caves

Melanochromis auratus is a true wild species, not a hybrid or aquarium strain.

🎨 Appearance

Females & juveniles:

Bright yellow body

Two bold black horizontal stripes

Adult dominant males:

Dark blue-black to black body

Pale blue or yellow striping (reversed pattern)

This color reversal is unique and often confuses aquarists

🍽️ Diet (Preferred Food)

In the wild:

Primarily an aufwuchs feeder

Feeds on:

Algae

Diatoms

Small invertebrates on rock surfaces

In the aquarium:

Spirulina-based flakes or pellets

Vegetable-rich Mbuna foods

Occasional light protein:

Brine shrimp

Daphnia

⚠️ Avoid high-protein animal foods (bloodworms, beef heart). Auratus are very prone to Malawi bloat if fed incorrectly.

Extremely aggressive and territorial

One of the most dominant Mbuna species
