Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa

Found primarily around Likoma Island and nearby reefs

Inhabits shallow to mid-depth rocky reef zones

Strongly associated with rock faces, caves, and crevices

Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos is a true wild species, not a hybrid or aquarium strain.

🎨 Appearance

Deep electric blue body

Two bold black horizontal stripes running from head to tail

Unlike Melanochromis auratus, males and females share similar coloration

One of the most visually striking blue Mbuna species

🍽️ Diet (Preferred Food)

In the wild:

Primarily an aufwuchs feeder

Grazes on:

Algae

Diatoms

Small invertebrates growing on rock surfaces

In the aquarium:

Spirulina-based flakes or pellets

Vegetable-rich Mbuna foods

Occasional light protein supplements:

Brine shrimp

Daphnia

⚠️ Avoid heavy animal protein (bloodworms, beef heart). Like other Melanochromis, Maingano are prone to digestive issues if fed incorrectly.

🧠 Behavior & Temperament

Highly aggressive and territorial

Less extreme than Melanochromis auratus, but still not peaceful

Males strongly defend rock territories

Best kept:

In species-only tanks, or

With other robust, aggressive Mbuna

Keep 1 male with several females to spread aggression
