🌍 Occurrence (Natural Origin)

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa

Naturally found around Likoma Island and nearby rocky reefs

Inhabits rocky shoreline and reef zones, typical Mbuna habitat

Closely associated with rock crevices, caves, and vertical rock faces

Melanochromis joanjohnsonae is a true wild species, not a hybrid or aquarium-created form.

🎨 Appearance

Females & juveniles:

Bright yellow to yellow-orange body

Two bold black horizontal stripes

Adult dominant males:

Dark blue-black to black body

Pale blue or light striping (color pattern reversal)

This sexual color reversal is characteristic of the genus Melanochromis

🍽️ Diet (Preferred Food)

In the wild:

Primarily an aufwuchs feeder

Grazes on:

Algae

Diatoms

Microscopic invertebrates on rock surfaces

In the aquarium:

Spirulina-based flakes or pellets

Vegetable-rich Mbuna foods

Occasional light protein:

Brine shrimp

Less extreme than Melanochromis auratus, but still dominant and combative

With other very aggressive Mbuna

Keep 1 male with several females to distribute aggression
