Melanochromis kaskazini is a true wild species, not a hybrid or aquarium strain.

Females & juveniles:

Yellow to yellow-orange body

Two bold black horizontal stripes

Adult dominant males:

Deep metallic blue to blue-black body

Lighter blue or pale striping (reversed color pattern)

The “Northern Blue” name refers to the intense blue coloration of mature males

In the wild:

Primarily an aufwuchs feeder

Feeds on:

Algae

Diatoms

Microscopic invertebrates growing on rock surfaces

With other extremely aggressive Mbuna

Keep 1 male with several females to spread aggression
