🌍 Occurrence (Natural Origin)

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa

Naturally occurs around Magunga on the Tanzanian (northern) shoreline

Habitat:

Rocky reefs and shoreline zones

Shallow to mid-depth water

Dense rock structures with caves and crevices

“Magunga” is a true locality designation, meaning this fish represents a natural wild population, not a hybrid or aquarium strain.

🎨 Appearance

Females & juveniles:

Bright yellow body

Dark horizontal striping (typical Mbuna pattern)

Adult dominant males:

Intense deep blue to purple-blue body

Strong vertical barring

This dramatic yellow-to-blue color change with maturity makes M. msobo especially popular

⚠️ Juveniles are often sold as “yellow Mbuna,” but males will lose yellow coloration completely as they mature.

In the wild:

Primarily an aufwuchs grazer
