Males are slightly larger and more brightly colored than females

🌍 Occurrence (Natural Origin)

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa

Originates from the Chilumba region along the northwestern shoreline

Rocky reef zones

Steep rocky slopes with strong wave action

Shallow to mid-depth waters

Strongly associated with algae-rich rocks

“Chilumba Gold” is a true geographic locality form, not a hybrid or line-bred strain.

🎨 Appearance

Adult males:

Intense golden yellow to orange-yellow body

Subtle darker barring may appear under stress

Fins usually yellow with light blue or white edging

Females & juveniles:

Yellow to dull yellow-brown

Less intense coloration than dominant males

One of the brightest yellow Tropheops forms

🍽️ Diet (Preferred Food)

In the wild:

Strict aufwuchs grazer

Feeds on:

Algae

Diatoms

Microscopic invertebrates on rock surfaces

In the aquarium:

Spirulina-based flakes or pellets
